Wordpress is a blogging platform. With each new version Wordpress is becoming a serious contender as a fully fledged Content Management System for blogging and non-blogging projects alike. Because Wordpress is database driven, unlike traditional HTML websites, users can focus on the quality of content without having any web design knowledge.

Posts and Pages

Wordpress sites are made up of Pages and Posts. Pages are generally for information which needs to be constantly available. Examples of pages are "About" or "Contact pages" these contain information which the author would want to be available regardless of which page they're on, on the blog.

Posts on the other hand are the standard format of, you guessed it, blog posts. These are typically stored in date order. The most recent posts are stored on the front page of your wordpress blog by default, though this can be changed if needs be.

Posts are organised in Categories and with tags. Categories organise posts into broad sub-topics. Tags are keywords which may be of special interest to readers. They will then be able to view all posts tagged with a particular word which interests them.

For example had this article been on a Wordpress blog about Wordpress blogs, the Category for this post might be called For Beginners, and the tags might be:

Beginner, plugins, pages, posts, themes, dashboard

The Dashboard

Everything in Wordpress is controlled from the Admin area. From the Admin area you can can create posts and pages, install and change themes, install and edit plugins and manage all of your Wordpress settings and administrative tasks.

Plugins - Adding Functionality

Plugins are the custom parts typically written by 3rd party developers that add functionality to your Wordpress blog. Plugins range from solutions to increase the performance of your blog to plugins that will turn your blog into a membership site or e-commerce solution.

Once you've installed Wordpress you may be slightly underwhelmed by what it has to offer. It is important to remember that Wordpress provides the basic blogging functionality. In order to emulate the sleek and sexy blogs out there you'll need to put some time into installing the right plugins to make your wordpress blog work for you.

Plugins can be installed and configured from within the admin area.

Themes - Adding personality

The entire look and feel of your wordpress site is determined by theme files. The best themes have a number of options which can be changed from within the admin area. The less options a theme has the less you will be able to customize it without specialist knowledge and the more likely it is that you will end up with a bland or unoriginal looking site. Good options to look for in a first theme are options to insert a logo and adjust the number or width of columns. If you can find a theme with colour options that is very useful as well, as you'll be able to change your theme look without having to learn a new set of theme options.

These are the basics of Wordpress. The whole purpose of Wordpress is to make your blog setup as easy as possible so you can focus on content. The beauty of Wordpress lies in the fact that you can be as technical as you want. If you are very interested in the inner workings, you'll find there are more than enough resources on the web that will show you how to do pretty much anything in Wordpress. If you're just interested in writing you'll find that if you put a bit of time into setting Wordpress up correctly you won't need to do anything but write content until you next decide your blog needs a facelift.

4. Make up your blog

You hate ugly design? Most of us love professional design with standard coding and our readers do too. There are a lot of free or paid themes that you can use for your blog. Frankly, the first impression is very important and your first time readers can be your loyal ones too if you show them that your blog is a professional one and you are doing a real job.

5. Using some plugins as a stepping stone.

Your contents are unique and original but are you sure it can be easily and quickly exposed to the world? It can be but very slow. However, you can use some plugins to reduce your time.

7. Blog commenting

Many bloggers are very lazy and not checking around the internet to see what blogs they should leave comments on. There are a lot of blogs that you can share ideas and feedback on their articles. However, my advice is that you should leave valued comments on high profile blogs with high PR and ranking. These HOT blogs are extremely fast indexed by Google, Yahoo and Bing and your link will have good opportunity to co-indexed too.

Don't spam links as your URL can potentially be blacklisted and never eligible to leave comments on these sites too.

Incorporating a Pleasing Aesthetic * When painting areas designed for seniors, choose bright colors and stay away from neutrals. You might consider using colors that evoke memories, so try to picture an area that your senior enjoys and paint with those hues. Ceilings don't have to be white and trim doesn't have to blend in, so don't be afraid to add some extra interest with contrast. * Choose colorful window treatments to help brighten up a room. You might look for fabrics that have bold patterns to keep a room's appearance attractive. * Try to evoke a vacation theme like a lakeside cottage or beach resort. WordPress Self-Hosted Blogs - Part 1 - How to Create a Page by Poncho Boojo

These step are based on the WordPress 2.7 version, which is the newest version to date.

CREATING A NEW POST

1. New Post button: Click on the New Post button and then type in your title in the title field. Titles are seen in summaries on RSS feeds, so it is very important to have a strong title with keywords whenever possible.

2. Blog Post: Now write your blog post in area provided and format it with font colours, headers, paragraph font, and add media such as pictures, video, and/or audio.

3. Excerpt: Go to the Excerpt field and write a quick, keyword-rich excerpt or summary of your blog post.

4. Trackback Links: If you have discussed another person, especially a blogger or their article, be sure to put a trackback link to let them know.

5. Discussion: Go to the discussion field and allow or disallow comments on your post. I always allow comments on my blog but do not allow them when I create a page. By default, "allow pingbacks" is set. Leave the setting and allow pingbacks.

6. Tags: add tags as per the previous instructions and remember that they are particular to each post you create.

7. Categories: choose and select the most appropriate category for your post

8. Publish: go up to the publish box and adjust the settings as you want them. You can publish immediately, set a future date, or save it as a draft.

Congratulations!! You have just created a blog post!

CREATING A NEW PAGE

1. New Page: Click on the drop down arrow on the New Post button and click on New Page. As with creating a new post, type in your title in the title field.

2. New Page Content: Now write the content for your new page in area provided and format it with font colours, headers, paragraph font, add media such as pictures, video, and/or audio. Remember that pages are static content and are used for "About Us", "Contact Us", and so on.

3. Discussion: Go to the discussion field and allow or disallow comments on your post. I normally do not allow comments on my pages, but do allow them on my blog posts. By default, "allow pingbacks" is set and you can leave it at that.

4. Attributes:

a. Parent: you can choose to have this page be a main page, or a subpage of an already established page. Read the example they give in this area.

b. Template: If your theme has custom templates for pages, you will see them in the drop down list-you can apply a template to the page you just created if you want to. See the example given.

c. Order: you can change the order of how your pages appear on the navigation bar. Read the example given.

5. Publish: go up to the publish box and adjust the settings as you want them. You can publish immediately, set a future date, or save it as a draft.

Congratulations!! You have just created a New Page!
